A Glance at Distribution

The distribution companies of the film making industry have vital roles being the middle man for getting the film from the studio to the eyes of popcorn munchers in theaters. Indeed, Studios employ the use of these distribution companies like Hannover House to distribute the movies however the larger studios have set departments to perform this action to reduce cost or negotiations making the process more efficient. A strong example of this would be a Columbia Pictures or a 21st Century Fox. Some companies like Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures went and purchased distribution companies like Buena Vista to distribute their movies rather than grow their own department.
The Distribution company's job is just that to distributed the finished product to the theaters of the world. This does get rather expensive or just a massive undertaking so the distribution companies may partner with other large distribution companies to mitigate risk for movies that aren't necessarily a slam dunk at the box office or movies like "Avengers: Endgame" where there are 4,662 theaters that had the movies in their lineup. For comparison, that movie had almost 2,000 more theaters playing it than the number two movie of that weekend.
Their is the business of DVDs or straight to DVD as well. These are called ancillary rights where the distributor is allowed to make the DVDs for the film. This can be a massive area of profit as the "Aquaman" DVD sold for a total of $17 Million in 2019 alone. This number is still sure to climb considering it was its only year Available. Another method of continuing to profit even after a movie is long gone from the silver screen is to sell the rights to a Streaming service to allow them to show to movie to add to their collection. This era is an interesting time as these streaming services may have become the distributor in their own rights as movies like "Bird-Box" (45 million views) and a directing legend with Martin Scorsese with his "The Irishman" streaming a total of  26 million in the first week. "The Irishman" received critical acclaim and was nominated for a variety of Oscars which is a massive step forward for the power of distribution on Netflix. Indeed, the distribution of movies is a powerful element of Hollywood as without it there would be no way to get these wonderful films our the viewers. A middle man is simply necessary.
