Creative Critical Reflection Draft #1

The Conventions we used in film were massively influenced by the movies we researched for example the POV shot as Svetlana approaches Ed's neck is a common staple for monster movies in which the "monster" approaches via this means. Another way the POV is incorporated is when the "monster" is hidden in bushes and characters walk by. Another Convention we used in the movie was the appearance of Svetlana in make-up to make her more pale, glue-in fangs, and black clothing. This was really demonstrated in the mid shot that went in a shot reverse shot to Ed's neck. The costume, in a mise-en-scene sense, fits the conventions of what you expect a vampire to look like. However, our vampire differs from the usual eastern european ideals of black hair and dark eyes. The movie has a draw to younger people by using the locales of Sarasota which happens to feature the number one beach in America so it figures to use a blonde, blue eyed girl. In this way it subverts part of the conventions. The Shot reverse shot of the vampire toward a victim is a classic tool used in the early versions of Dracula. The movies really used this to show blood dripping from the fangs of their Dracula or even right prior to the attack, which is the same situation we used it in. Those are a few of the conventions we followed but we tried to subvert a lot of the standard vampire conventions in film making via some of the features Svetlana has such as being afraid of blood and fainting, the level of conversation without an accent, and differences in some of her physical appearance.
